A modern fable in verse. Wise Monkey Wrought scroll N.011, "The Garden Gnome." The gnome was given a rod and a pond, and told to fish. The pond was concrete. The gnome did not complain. A gnome sat fishing by the pool, a painted rod above the stone. The pond was concrete, smooth and cool. The gnome fished on. He fished alone. The seasons turned above his hat. The summers browned. The winters bit. He did not move from where he sat. He did not think to question it. The family moved. The house was sold. New owners came, and owners went. The gnome fished on, as he was told. He was not told what fishing meant. The pond produced no single fish. The gnome stayed steady at his post. He had been given one small wish. He made no fuss, and made no boast. The pond has no fish. The gnome has no doubts. The best catches are the ones still to come.
