A modern fable in verse. Wise Monkey Wrought scroll N.008, "Murphy's Law." Murphy observed that anything that can go wrong will. The toast had read his work closely. The toast went up at half past eight, a golden, optimistic square. It left the plate to meet its fate, with butter glistening in the air. A slice that falls has two ways down, and one of them would leave no trace. It chose the carpet's paler brown, arriving butter first, with grace. What can go wrong maintains a list, and works through it in tidy turns, the parking fine, the meeting missed, the dinner that politely burns. No malice moved the falling bread. It kept the schedule, nothing more. The law requires it lands outspread, and butter down obeys the law. Murphy wrote the law. The toast enforces it.
