The Banana

A modern fable in verse. Wise Monkey Wrought scroll N.002, "The Banana." The banana arrived green and would leave brown. Between the two, it was scheduled to be perfect for roughly two hours. The bowl received it firm and green, a fruit with prospects, on the rise. The finest specimen yet seen, said everyone with hopeful eyes. Each morning came the expert press, the peel inspected, gravely weighed. Not yet, the verdict, more or less. Consumption formally delayed. Its hour arrived on Tuesday, sweet, and yellow to the last degree, a window brief but quite complete. The house was out until past three. The brown moved in without a fight. No one observed the changing shade. The fruit was carried, late one night, to colder storage. Plans were made. It joined four others in the frost, each frozen at the brown stage too, each one deposited, not lost, awaiting bread. The bread is due. The freezer holds five bananas and one intention.
