A modern fable in verse. Wise Monkey Wrought scroll N.034, "The Bench." The bench has stood in the square, since the council paid for it. It has seated everyone who asked, and several who did not. A bench stood patient in the square, and took the weather with good grace. It held the tired, the love affair, and gave each one an equal space. A courier swore, and checked his map. A dog lay down and had a nap. A child climbed up to rule the town, was king till three, then slid back down. At six, a man in tailored blue sat down as if it knew his name. The damp came up, as damp will do. The bench sat everyone the same. He felt the damp, and stood up straight, and left the square at quite a rate. The pigeons claimed the place he'd been. The bench received them, just as keen. Wood does not know rank. Pride comes before a fall. The dew came before them both.
